Founded in 1998 by George and Christine Greatorex, the Academy of Design has developed an excellent reputation with both our customers and trading partners.
The business is run by Andrew Greatorex & Robert Harness and provides a vast selection of kitchen and bedroom products at sensible prices, supported by an honest, friendly and efficient, sales and installation service.

We don’t rely on fancy offers or gimmicks, preferring to offer excellent advice, quality products at affordable prices, supported by good old fashioned service.

Our Process
Unlike the majority of the national kitchen retailers, independent showrooms such as ourselves offer a much more bespoke and personable service. From the point of scheduling your initial home survey, you will be assigned an in-house designer who will be your soul contact throughout your entire project from start to finish.
Survey
​
We offer a free, no obligation Survey and Design service. During your home survey, we will discuss your requirements in detail, ensuring we have as much information as possible to design a kitchen or bedroom to suit your specifications. Our home surveys usually last 1 hour.
​
You may be planning a new kitchen for an extension, in which case we would invite you to bring your plans in and we would have an in-depth discussion about your requirements during your visit.
Whilst it is important to understand your budget requirements, we also appreciate you mightn’t have a particular figure in mind or prefer not to share that information with us until you’ve received your initial quote for transparency. We respect that decision and are confident that we have products to suit every budget.
Design

Once we have prepared some designs, we will invite you into our showroom for an informal chat. There may be more than one way to lay your kitchen or bedroom out therefore we like to prepare a handful of designs to discuss, some of which you’ve asked for, but also some that you perhaps haven’t considered.
​
We will also prepare an initial quotation based on the design that most suits your requirements so you have that early indication of cost.
​
The aim of this first visit is to get as close to a finalised layout as we can. Whilst we’re happy to, it can be a little overwhelming picking a specific sink, tap, appliances, worktops and accessories in that first visit. We will have a relatively clear idea of what it is you’re looking for from the information we gathered during our survey of which we will base your quotation on.
Quote
​
Following your initial design appointment, we will email you an official quote based on the layout and discussions had in our showroom. It’s at this stage that we welcome your honest feedback. This will give us the opportunity to amend or adjust your quote to ensure we remain within your allocated budget. We have products to suit all budgets so if you feel your initial quote is more than you wish to spend, absolutely let us know!

Within your quotation, we will include an Installation price should you require the use of one of our expert kitchen fitters.
​
If you simply wish for a supply only service, this is available too! We can offer you flat packed units or fully assembled.
Installation Services
In addition to design and supply, we also offer the services of our Prep and Installation teams.
Preparation Service
​
Whilst you may already have contacts in the trades, not everyone has that luxury. We offer a fully project managed prep service by time served, local tradesmen, so you can sit back and relax while our experts transform your home. This covers aspects such as:

Removal of your existing kitchen & tiles

Building works such as removal of walls or replacement doors & windows etc

Electrics & lighting
-
Plumbing & radiators
-
Plastering
This work is carried out by local independent experts, who have worked with us for many years and offer the same level of commitment and attention to detail as ourselves.

If you wish to utilise these services, simply let us know. We will forward your contact details and a copy of your proposed plan on to the team, and they will contact you to arrange a survey and provide you with a quote for all required works.
Installation Service
​
We have teams of local, time served kitchen fitters available to carry out your kitchen installation should you require. This installation service is essentially covering the following elements:

Fitting of all cabinets, furniture items and accessories

Fitting of worktops, upstands & splashbacks

Plumbing of sink, tap, dishwasher, washing machine to an existing supply & waste
-
Fitting of appliances (if on a 13amp plug)
The installation of your kitchen is just as important as the quality of the kitchen itself so we highly recommend using the team but you are by no means bound to use them if you wish to install your own kitchen or you perhaps have your own kitchen fitter.
